Have you seen your Google rankings improve recently?
Google tweaked its algorithm for ranking websites on March 12, and the good news is most sites have seen an improvement in their rankings. Several sites that track search engines report that many web developers are getting higher rankings with the new algorithm update. This comes after Google’s August update when several sites were disappointed to see their rankings go down.
Google doesn’t reveal exactly what their new algorithms look for when ranking websites. In a video, however, Google Senior Webmaster Trends Analyst John Mueller said the March update included “incremental changes.” Many search engine experts considered the update — officially called the March 2019 Core Algorithm Update but nicknamed Florida 2 — a rollback of sorts from August.
Considering that most sites get the majority of their web traffic from search engines — and that Google is the top search engine — website managers and digital marketers closely watch Google’s algorithm changes. It’s not uncommon for business and online marketing sites to explode with articles that try to pick apart what the new algorithm has done, and how to update your site to get top rankings in Google’s search results and stay there.
The more common-sense, less-panicky approach to frequent algorithm changes, though, is to create a good site that has a solid foundation in search engine optimization practice. At its most basic, your site can rank high when you:
- Know your customers.
- Create content optimized for your keyword phrases that people actually search for.
- Make your site mobile- and voice-search friendly.
- Establish your site as an authority in your industry.
All of this goes a long way toward getting high rankings. Then when algorithms change, you shouldn’t have to worry about the possibility of a few minor tweaks to your site.
